The Emporia High boys basketball team won the Paul Terry Classic for the third consecutive year.
On Saturday, the Spartans defeated Hayden, 60-44, which forced a 3-way tie with Emporia High, Spring Hill and Hayden all with 2-1 records. Emporia High was named the tournament champions based on point differential. The first three quarters of the game were tight knit with neither team holding a lead greater than five points. Emporia High had a 14-13 lead after the first quarter that turned into a 27-23 lead at halftime. Both teams went back and forth in the third with the Spartans leading 44-39 heading into the fourth quarter. Emporia High began the fourth quarter with a 12-0 and led by as many as 17 and never looked back. Three Spartans were in double figures led by Harry Trelc with 13 points, Rylan Crowell with 12 and Nolan Jacob with 11. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said he was proud of the way his team did everything right.
Emporia High is now 3-1 on the season.
In the girls game, Hayden defeated the Lady Spartans, 54-13. Hayden led 15-2 after the first and turned into a 35-5 halftime lead and never looked back. Sidney B’Hymer and Maycee Davis each led Emporia High with three points. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said the Lady Spartans lacked energy in the game.
Emporia High is 0-4 on the season. Both teams wrap up the pre-Christmas schedule at Great Bend on Tuesday. The RV-Doc Pregame Show begins at 5:45 p.m. on KVOE.
