There are more traffic flow adjustments as Emporia’s 24th and Prairie waterline project continues.
City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says Prairie Street is reopening to two-way traffic this week between 15th and 18th. Along with that, Prairie Street northbound from 18th is open — but Prairie southbound is closed from 22nd south to 18th as installation of 24-inch water main begins at 22nd and continues south to 21st.
Weather permitting, construction could still go into fall 2025 as the city builds out over two miles of new pipe and creates over 30 new service lines and other connections. The city’s other major waterline project, officially called the Southeast Transmission Project, will span over seven miles of new pipe from 12th and Garfield to the Warren Way water tower. City Engineer Jim Ubert says the project could go out to bid early next year, with construction possibly starting this upcoming spring.
