Lyon County commissioners are poised to vote on zoning regulations that could pause — but not end — Stormont Vail’s push towards a new facility in Emporia.
As part of their action meeting Thursday, commissioners are set to vote on zoning code text changes regarding hospitals and the proposed text changes revolving around “Licensed Medical Facilities.” The Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board voted unanimously to recommend the changes last week.
The changes include a general designation change from hospitals to licensed medical facilities, with other changes including additions for applicability, site plans and provided services; as well as additions defining different facilities.
This would have at least a short-term impact on Stormont’s request for property at the southeast corner of Roads 180 and G, purchased this past spring and annexed by the city of Emporia last month. While being city-annexed, the property remains zoned by Lyon County — so Stormont would essentially need to ask for city zoning for its plan to move forward. City Attorney Christina Montgomery says that process could include platting or project layout, along with building plan approvals and site securing in addition to an official rezoning request.
Other business includes a $34,000 encumbrance for the 2024 audit fee from Agler and Gaeddert, as well as a letter of support for Coffey County’s EMP Shield project and three executive sessions — one for non-elected personnel, one for unspecified legal matters and one for real property acquisition.
The action meeting begins at 9 am Thursday at the County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
