The Emporia High boys wrestling team claimed the Winter Classic Championship on Saturday.
Emporia High won the tournament with 211 points, winning the tournament by one point over runner-up Hutchinson. The Spartans had one individual champion, Gabe Wassom at 113 pounds defeated Hutchinson’s Cruz Cannon by an 11-6 decision in the championship match. Braxton Malone finished second at 144 losing by fall in 1 minute 12 seconds to Cruz Hershberger of Buhler. Garrett LeBlanc finished second at 157 losing by fall to Max Harris of Hutchinson in 2 minutes 26 seconds. Jose Vargas finished second at 285 falling to Josh Flanigan of Wamego, 11-5. Walker Metcalfe (106), Holden Timmons (126), Jackson Goodman (132), Landon Wohletz (138) and Tayten Ervin (175) each finished third in their weight classes. Fernando Arzate (215) finished fourth, while Mateo Boldridge (120) and Keven Cubias (150) finished fifth in their weight classes.
Emporia High is off until Jan. 7 when it travels to Spring Hill for a dual.
