Emporia State University’s LEAP! Program –Lifestyle Empowerment for Alzheimer’s Prevention — is seeking volunteers for a brand new study meant to get residents up and active.
The Exercise From Afar program is seeking residents from nearby and surrounding rural areas who may want to get active but feel they do not have the time. LEAP! Coordinator Erin Blocker, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, says they are looking for a total of just over 50 participants with 30 spots still available.
The program will take place over 16 weeks with participants encouraged to exercise or take part in at least three workouts per week. In addition to the age range, participants must be willing to communicate with trainers, have a smartphone that can download the app and have no conditions preventing them from exercising safely.
While enrollment for the program is still open at this time, the first round of programming is set to begin Monday.
This comes as LEAP! is getting set to begin its final year of participation with the Combined Exercise Trial, or COMET study, through the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and KU Center for Physical Activity and Weight Management. The study provides a free personal trainer for individuals between 65 and 80 to measure how the brain responds to resistance training, cardio, core infusion training, and a combination of resistance-aerobic training.
Blocker says the Emporia participants in the program have received a large amount of praise for their dedication and hard work with the program.
COMET is a five-year program with LEAP! coming on board for the final four years.
If you are interested in taking part in either study you can email EBlocker@Emporia.EDU or find LEAP! on Facebook.
