A successful Wreaths Across America effort this year is leading to an early-bird effort for the veteran recognition effort next year.
Local organizer Scott Burenheide says people can get two veteran wreaths for the price of one — at least until Jan. 17 — if they work through the American Legion Post 5, Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention or North Lyon County Veterans Memorial.
There is now an annual recognition and wreath-laying event in December, but Burenheide says Wreaths Across America is now a year-round effort.
Over 660 wreaths were placed as part of the 2024 event Dec. 14. Retirement — or pickup — for those wreaths will be Jan. 11. Volunteers are needed for that effort.
Next year’s event is Dec. 13, and the goal is to get at least 1,600 wreaths sponsored for next December. Over 2,300 veterans are buried at Maplewood Memorial Lawn.
Residents wanting veteran-specific wreaths need to specify that information when they finalize their sponsorships.
