The end of one calendar year and the start of the next is a busy time for Emporia’s Solid Waste Department.
The department has its regular pickup schedule through the holidays this year because both Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Wednesday, but there will definitely be more trash to pick up between the holidays starting Thursday. Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn says people can leave extra bags of trash near their Polycarts through New Year’s Eve, but they need to be secured.
When it comes to recycling, Senn says certain things should go into the trash instead.
Senn also urges residents to break down any boxes to be recycled so they don’t serve as advertisements for potential criminal activity.
Along with the extra trash pickup and likely increased recycling, Solid Waste also has its Christmas tree dropoff effort beginning Thursday.
Trees used to be mulched after going through a grinder, but Senn says trees are now incinerated.
Dropoff locations are the Lyon County Fairgrounds north entrance, Guion’s Showcase and Dillons. Dropoff will be available Thursday through Jan. 2.
