Dirt work has resumed at the site of a notable retail project in far west Emporia.
Brownstone 3 Development Vice President of Operations Darrin Dodge says this round of earthwork is part of the site preparation process. The travel plaza, or gas station, is the first phase of the project with an unspecified number of hotels and restaurants set to follow.
Dodge says final negotiations continue for the travel plaza flag. Kwik Stop had been announced as the travel plaza name a year ago.
The project has been in the development stage since 2020. When it was announced, Brownstone CEO John Brown anticipated a $35 million-$40 million project creating at least 100 jobs.
The better-than-30-acre development is just west of the US Highway 50 and Graphic Arts intersection, immediately south of the US-50 roundabout and just east of the Flying J travel plaza, which includes a truck stop, gas station, Huddle House restaurant and Emporia RV Park.
