It was a good start to the 2025 portion of the schedule for the Emporia High boys swim and dive team on Thursday.
The Spartans won their home invitational with 485 points winning the meet by 60 points over Seaman.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Beckett Schultz, Collin Moody, Luke Marshall and Logan Woydziak won the event in 1:46.40. The quartet made up the 400-yard freestyle relay team that took second (4:08.62).
Brayden Shaw finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:29.56) and was second in the 500-yard freestyle (7:03.13). Shaw said the Spartans were ready to get back to work after the holiday break.
Taegan Kelley finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 3:04.19 and was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.56). Woydziak finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.21) and took third in the 100-yard freestyle (55.52) Marshall finished third in the 50 free (25.31) and was fourth in the 100 free (58.54). Owen Dawson finished third in the 200 free (2:30.24) and was fourth in the 500 free (7:27.67). Rylan Navarro finished fifth in the 500 free (7:28.95). Hunter Symmonds finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:22.36), while Moody finished fifth (1:26.61).
The 200-yard medley relay team of Brayden Sweet, Bryce Heiman, Kelley and Evan James finished fourth with a time of 2:24.44.
Emporia High coach Phil Metz said Thursday was a good confidence boost for the Spartans.
In the diving portion of the event, three Spartans competed. Morrow Krueger finished fourth with a score of 129.75. Symmonds finished sixth with a score of 125.15. Tegan Mitchell finished eighth with a 96.55.
The divers will be off next week and compete at Topeka West on Jan. 14. The swimmers are back in action next Thursday at 4 p.m. in their next home invitational.
