Emporia Fire handled a pair of blazes on New Year’s Day.
Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says the first call was around 3:30 pm to the 1500 block of Road 175, just east of Emporia, after a number of hay bales caught fire. Early indications are a trash burn was too close to the bales, so despite relatively light winds, the bales caught fire. Ultimately, about 45 were either damaged or destroyed.
Roughly an hour later, firefighters handled a much smaller grass fire in the Interstate 35 median near the Industrial Road exit. The cause of that fire is undetermined.
No injuries were reported with either fire call.
