The Emporia State basketball teams fell twice to Washburn at White Auditorium on Saturday in the Turnpike Tussle.
The #2 Ichabods raced out to a 13-3 lead and never trailed on the way to a 105-77 win over the Hornets. Jack Bachelor scored 11 of Washburn’s first 13 and ESU never got back into the game. Washburn finished the half up 56-39 and started the second half with an early 12-1 run to put the game out of reach. Washburn (14-0, 4-0 MIAA) finished 64% from the field in the game. Hornet head coach Tom Billeter was impressed.
Malik Edwards Jr. finished with 13 points to lead ESU (4-9, 1-3 MIAA) while Dallas Bear matched a career high with four 3-pointers to score 12.
In the women’s game, Washburn came from 11 down in the second half to nip the Hornets 64-61. ESU responded to Washburn’s game opening basket with 10-straight points, but the visitors answered with a 14-4 run and the game was tied at 16 after one. Both teams struggled to shoot in the second period as the Hornets went into the break up 28-25. ESU built an 11-point lead in the third quarter, but Washburn answered to rip off a 13-0 run to take the lead. ESU scored six in a row to bridge the third and final periods and lead by four, but Washburn used a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. Assistant coach John Ishee said the Lady Hornets gave good effort, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a bad shooting night.
Freshman center Makenzie McDaniel finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while Katie Horyna scored 13 points with a career high 11 rebounds. ESU (7-6, 2-2 MIAA) finished just 4-for-23 from outside the arc.
The Hornets hit the road Thursday for a doubleheader at Fort Hays State. Pregame begins at 5:00 p.m. with the doubleheader tipping off at 5:30 p.m. on the Hornet Sports Network/Mix 104.9.
