Emporia Spartan Boxer Cristian “Gio” Cervantes had a good showing at the Silver Gloves Regional tournament in Illinois Saturday.
Cervantes competed in the finals of the 154 lbs division looking to earn a spot at the Silver Gloves national tournament later this month. Cervantes went all three rounds and earned an eight count in the third.
Unfortunately, Cervantes would come out on the wrong side of a split decision ending his hopes for reaching the national stage this year. Despite the loss, coaches commented that Cervantes had shown significant improvement since his first regional bout a year prior and noted they have high expectations for him in the future.
Cervantes was the only Spartan competitor to reach the regional stage and this was his first loss in nearly a year after he amassed a four bout win streak heading into the competition.
