Emporia’s Country Mart grocery store is in the middle of an unplanned shutdown.
On Saturday, the store announced via social media it would need to close through Monday. It also said it was working with Evergreen Design/Build to “make sure everything is safe and sound before reopening.”
Store Manager Gary Andrews says the snow and ice weight over the prior week caused unspecified structural issues. Engineers are set to conduct a survey Monday. There are plans underway to reopen the store Tuesday alongside plans for repairs, depending on the survey results.
Emporia had up to a quarter-inch of ice and 5-plus inches of snowfall Jan. 3-4, along with another 2-3 inches of snowfall Thursday into Friday.
Lyon County records indicate the building was constructed as a supermarket in 1978 with over 22,000 square feet of space.
