Stop us if you have heard this before: drivers will need to be careful Sunday morning due to winter weather conditions.
Spotty black ice has been noted in several areas of Emporia after a refreeze from Saturday’s temperatures in the mid-30s and a light wintry mix from Saturday night. Patchy freezing fog is possible through late morning, and the National Weather Service says some could be locally dense — although not widespread enough as of sunrise to merit an official advisory.
Emporia’s main streets and residential collector streets, or more heavily traveled residential streets, were dry Saturday, while side streets were snowpacked. Public Works Director Dean Grant says crews were out briefly Sunday morning to treat trouble spots.
Aside from the Kansas Turnpike, which has had seasonal conditions or isolated icing for several days, Kandrive.gov says the rest of the area’s highway network is in good shape — clearing out round lunchtime Saturday for the first time since Jan. 4, when an extended period of freezing drizzle and freezing rain shifted to 5-plus inches of snowfall Jan. 5.
Emporia Police continues Level 2 crash reporting until further notice, so drivers involved in non-injury or low-level-damage incidents can exchange insurance information at the scene and report those wrecks to officers at a later date.
