The Emporia High basketball teams split their makeup doubleheader with Hays Tuesday night at Spartans.
The Emporia High boys trailed by seven points on three different occasions and rallied for a 41-36 victory over the Indians. After the game was tied at four, Hays went on a 7-0 run to lead 11-4 and eventually led 11-7 after the first quarter. Both teams managed a 7-7 second quarter with the Indians leading 18-14 at halftime. Hays managed to get back up seven at 25-18 before the Spartans made it 25-22 heading into the fourth. Hays led 28-22 early in the fourth quarter before the Spartans used a 12-0 run to lead 34-28 and never relinquished the lead despite Hays pulling within one. Harry Trelc led Emporia High with 18 points. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin was proud of how his team finished a game.
Emporia High is now 4-2 on the season.
In the girls game, it was all Hays, 66-12. Emporia High held a 3-0 lead before Hays scored 21 straight and never looked back. Hays led 40-8 at halftime with a running clock put into effect in the fourth quarter. Jayde Aguirre had three points to lead the way for the Lady Spartans. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said there were still positives from the game.
Emporia High is now 0-6 on the season. Both teams open up Centennial League play at Washburn Rural on Friday.
