Emporia State University is preparing to honor the life and legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr with activities next week.
The federal holiday is Monday, and ESU has activities later in the week, starting with a Day of Service on Wednesday. BRIDGE and Intercultural Center Coordinator Percy Holt, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show on Thursday, says service is a key component of Dr King’s legacy.
Day of Service activities will be from 10 am to 2 pm Jan. 22 at the Memorial Union and include opportunities for students, faculty and staff to write notes of encouragement and support for students using Corky’s Cupboard for basic needs.
Activities conclude Jan. 23 with the official MLK Commemoration Dinner. Activities will take place from 6-8 pm in the Memorial Union Preston Family Room, including a lasagna dinner, speeches and information from the ESU Black Student Union.
In years past, there has been a second public celebration of King’s life and legacy, including a peaceful march and a gathering at a local church. So far, there is no word of that activity happening this month.
