The Emporia High basketball teams were swept at Washburn Rural on Friday night.
Washburn Rural took the girls game, 55-24. Emporia High led by eight in the first quarter and led 10-6 heading into the second. The Lady Spartans built their lead back to eight but Washburn Rural went on a 15-2 run to lead 21-16 at halftime. Emporia High managed just eight points in the second half. Jayde Aguirre led Emporia High with eight points. Emporia High head coach Taylor Scott saw some positives from her team early.
Emporia High is 0-7, 0-1 in the Centennial League. The Lady Spartans travel to Wichita Independent on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip.
Washburn Rural took the boys game, 42-28. The Junior Blues scored the first five points before the Spartans responded with five of their own. Washburn Rural led 14-10 after one and never looked back holding the Spartans to four points in the second quarter. The Junior Blues led by as many as 18 but the Spartans couldn’t get the deficit under 10. Rylan Crowell led Emporia High with 13. Emporia High head coach Lee Baldwin said the second quarter was a difference maker.
Emporia High is 4-3, 0-1 in the Centennial League. The Spartans open up play in the Bluestem Classic in El Dorado on Thursday. Opponent and time to be announced sometime Saturday.
