The Emporia High girls basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday night at Wichita Independent.
Emporia High led from start to finish in a 36-32 victory over the Lady Panthers. The Lady Spartans scored the game’s first 10 points and led 14-3 after one. Independent outscored the Lady Spartans 11-7 in the second to cut the lead to 21-14 at halftime. Independent cut the deficit to four at 21-17 to start the second half before Maycee Davis went on a 6-2 run to extend the lead back to eight with Emporia leading 29-22 heading into the fourth quarter, but Independent managed to pull within four at 29-25 before EHS went on a 6-0 run to lead 35-25. Independent outscored 5-1 in the final two-plus minutes. Maycee Davis led Emporia High with a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Emporia High head coach Taylor Scott, who picked up her first career win, said it was a team effort.
Emporia High is now 1-7 on the season and will face Hayden on Friday at 6 p.m. at Spartan Gymnasium. The game is a makeup from January 7. The Emporia High boys open up their mid-season tournament at the Bluestem Classic beginning Thursday against Wichita Trinity. Coverage will begin at 7:30 p.m. on 1400 AM/96.9 FM KVOE.
