Lyon County Commissioners have officially contributed county dollars to the new development in west Emporia set to bring QuikTrip to town.
As part of their regular action meeting Thursday, commissioners directed Lyon County Controller Dan Williams to pay out $250,000 to the city of Emporia for road construction connected to the Flint Hills Crossing development. As KVOE News reported late last year, commissioners had encumbered those dollars — put them on hold — until they saw progression on the development.
One of the talking points ahead of that decision last year was on the Emporia City Commission’s decision to annex property owned by Stormont Vail into the city limits the month before. Given the timing and the discussion, KVOE News asked commissioners at that time if the decision to encumber the $250,000 was a retaliatory action towards the city which commissioners stated it was not.
KVOE News asked County Commission Chairman Ken Duft the same question Thursday and again he stated the decision to encumber the dollars had nothing to do with the Stormont annexation.
Duft says the county was simply being cautious due to a lengthy delay in the development of Flint Hills Crossing.
In other business Thursday, Commissioners received the latest quarterly report from administration of CareArc and Lyon County Public Health. Lyon County Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga will be joining KVOE’s 7:20 am Newsmaker Friday.
Separately Thursday commissioners:
*Approved the purchase of a new transit van for LCAT totaling $91,586.
*Approved a quote from National Sign Company Inc. for sign materials totaling $7,662.50 to be paid for through the county’s Special Road and Bridge fund.
*Approved a better than $9,000 quote for 2025 valuation mailings.
Lyon County Commissioners will reconvene for their weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
