It may surprise you to know Emporia’s Sertoma Club is among the oldest Sertoma clubs in existence.
In fact, the centennial celebration at Champions Landing on Friday honors a club that’s the fourth-oldest in existence nationwide. Club member Terri Summey says being part of the club is a good way to both serve the community and learn more about it.
Sertoma International President Bea Gabany says service clubs, Sertoma included, serve vital roles for the communities in which they serve.
Sertoma’s celebration isn’t done yet. Summey says plans are developing for a public birthday party June 1 at Soden’s Grove.
Besides the well-known miniature train in Soden’s Grove, club members fly American flags for national holidays and Emporia State flags for university football games and special dates. The club also has a well-known biscuits and gravy fundraising breakfast.
