Firearms enthusiasts from near and far converged on the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building this weekend.
The reason was a gun show hosted by GMV Promotions, a family-owned business that hosts shows across the state. GMV CEO Micah Marriott says in addition to providing a safe space for individuals to view and purchase firearms, the events they host also come with an educational aspect thanks to some of their vendors and buyers.
While it hasn’t dominated headlines quite as fiercely as it has in the past in recent years, the topic of gun violence and the second amendment are still high on the list of controversial societal subjects. KVOE News broached the topic with Marriott who stated she and her family are always open to dialogue on the subject with those who may or may not share their opinions on the matter.
She adds that, in her opinion, an individual’s stance on the matter often stems from both their experiences and upbringing.
Many Emporia residents attended the gun show this weekend including the recently appointed new executive director of the Kansas State Rifle Association and shooting sports competitor Megan Hillbish. Hillbish walked the show floor and spoke with KVOE News following her visit saying she thought it was an excellent show for Emporia. She did wish there was a bit more of an educational component focused on younger individuals.
When asked if she felt the Emporia show, or shows like it, are conducive spaces for discussion and dialogue on firearms, Hillbish says it can depend on those in attendance.
Hillbish also pointed out that many of the vendors on hand were doing far more than just trying to sell firearms, many were also going the extra mile to educate those in attendance.
During the show, individuals were able to purchase and sell firearms through the various licensed vendors.
