A ruling connected to the man convicted of killing Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels 20 years ago is still several weeks away.
Scott Cheever is into his latest appeal following the shooting death of Samuels in early 2005 as Samuels was leading a drug raid near Hilltop. Kansas Office of Judicial Administration Public Information Director Lisa Taylor tells KVOE News an evidentiary hearing, listed on the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal as a bench trial, concluded in October. The presiding judge, Mike Ward, has requested a transcript of those proceedings in November, and that process is ongoing. Once the transcript is written, possibly by late February or early March, attorneys on both sides will submit “proposed findings of fact and conclusions of law.” A ruling will follow.
Cheever, age 43, was convicted of capital murder in 2007 and was sentenced to death — along with over 700 months in prison for charges including attempted capital murder, manufacturing methamphetamine and conspiracy to manufacture meth. Cheever has been through a number of appeals since his conviction.
