Wichita Heights’ pressure was too much for the Emporia High girls basketball team Thursday night in the opening round of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament at Spartan Gymnasium.
The Falcons, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, led from start to finish in a 47-14 victory over the Lady Spartans. Wichita Heights led 12-3 after one before Emporia High pulled within seven, but not any closer the rest of the way. The Falcons led 31-11 at halftime and 42-12 at the end of three quarter to trigger a running clock in the fourth quarter. Maycee Davis led Emporia High with five points. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said she saw her team compete for a full 32 minutes.
Emporia High (1-9) will face Wichita South in a consolation semifinal at 4:45 p.m. Friday at Spartan Gymnasium. Wichita South fell to Derby, 47-42. No radio coverage due to coverage of the Emporia High boys at Wichita Independent. Prior to Emporia High and Wichita South, Wichita Northwest and Topeka High will meet in the other consolation semifinal at 3:15 p.m.. Seaman defeated Wichita Northwest, 56-15, while Shawnee Mission South defeated Topeka High, 54-51. Seaman will face Shawnee Mission South in the second winner’s bracket semifinal while Derby and Wichita Heights will play in the first winner’s bracket semifinal at 6:15 p.m.
