The state of Kansas has more time to submit paperwork bolstering chances of a major federal disaster declaration after winter weather activity in early January.
Last week, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for an extension into early March to submit paperwork. The request was approved this week, giving Kansas officials more time to develop preliminary assessments to help offset public infrastructure costs for damage to roads and bridges.
The state’s disaster declaration request follows ice, snow, high winds and extreme cold Jan. 4-5. On KVOE’s Morning Show earlier this week, Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell said the county will likely not see any federal reimbursement dollars if the state is indeed approved for the disaster declaration.
