Veterans who haven’t taken the step to move to a new online login system for their services and benefits now have more time to make the move.
The Department of Veterans Affairs originally had this past Friday as the deadline to make the change. VA Eastern Kansas HealthCare Systems Communications Chief Brian Stephens, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, says the new deadline is March 4. He says there have been some frustrations about technology.
Veterans need to create an account, using login.gov or ID.me. They then need to follow the online prompts to verify their identity and also enable a multi-step authentication process. If veterans aren’t sure if they have an account, they should set one up anyway because the new system will recognize a prior account.
Access to secure messaging, prescription refills, appointment scheduling and disability claims will be restricted until veterans make the change, but Stephens says the VA will have people ready to help in those situations. Veterans can also get in-person verification at US Postal Service offices across the country, including the Emporia office at 625 Merchant.
Step-by-step instructions are online at va.gov/sign-in-changes. Veterans can also visit their local VA facility for guidance or they can call 800-698-2411.
