Last month had two periods of bitter cold, but Lyon County Extension Ag Agent Brian Rees says his cattle seem to be unfazed by that weather.
Rees says the snow and ice that lingered across parts of the KVOE listening area for much of January helped to recharge the soil profile to a degree. Besides helping spring crops get a decent start, Rees says that will also help cattle later in the year.
Rees also says the snow and ice helped to insulate and protect much of the county’s winter wheat crop. He says the crop could have dealt with substantial freeze damage or even winter kill had the snowpack not been in place.
