The Philadelphia Eagles claimed their second world title with a convincing 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday. In a game in which the Chiefs defense held vaunted Eagles running back Saquon Barkley to just 57 yards on 23 carries, it was the Eagles getting six sacks on Patrick Mahomes that proved to be the difference. The Eagles picked up all their sacks without a blitz winning the trenches four on five and keeping Mahomes uncomfortable all game. Philadelphia led 24-0 at the half and eventually stretched the lead to 34-0 in the third quarter. Mahomes finished 21-for-32 with 257 yards, three touchdowns but two picks. Jalen Hurts finished 17-for-22 for 221 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and ran for a third score with 72 yards on the ground. Xavier Worthy caught eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Head coach Andy Reid gave his team credit for coming closer than any other group to a third-straight Lombardi trophy.
Mahomes called it the most painful loss of his career.
Kansas City finishes the year 17-3.
