With snowfall expected to blanket much of the KVOE listening area through the early half of the coming week, a winter storm watch now blankets the entire area through the same time frame.
The National Weather Service has issued a storm watch for Lyon and all surrounding counties from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon. The watch reflects the possibility of 5-9 inches of snowfall between Tuesday and Wednesday as part of a second wave of winter weather expected to impact the area beginning Monday.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Nathan Griesemer says residents can expect little to no accumulation between Monday and Tuesday with the “main event” coming late Tuesday night through the early to mid-morning hours Wednesday.
Griesemer says the good news is the forecasted winter storm should be far less severe than the one that impacted the state of Kansas in early January.
With the winter storm watch now in effect, the City of Emporia has announced the activation of several warming shelters. The list includes:
The Emporia Police Department entryway is open 24 hours. Pets are welcome if controlled by the owner.
