Ten Emporia High Lady Spartan wrestlers clinched tickets to the Class 5A State Wrestling Championships later this month on Saturday in Topeka.
Emporia High finished fourth in the 5A West Regional hosted by Seaman, finishing with 158.5 points. The Lady Spartans finished behind regional champion Kapaun Mt. Carmel, regional runner-up Hays and Newton. Emporia High had four wrestlers in regional championship matches with one regional champion. Kensley Medrano won the regional championship at 120 by an ultimate tiebreaker, 2-1, over Seaman’s Taylie Heston. Heily Batres (115), Gabby Duarte (190) and Alexa Castillo each finished second. Batres was pinned at 2 minutes and 46 seconds by Newton’s Avery Hinojos. Duarte fell 3-2 in a tiebreaker to Eleanor Stoffel of Hays. Castillo was pinned by Kapaun’s Gianna Redcorn at 3 minutes and 55 seconds.
Also qualifying for the state for the Lady Spartans are Yaneli Carranza, who finished third at 145. Claire Starr at 130 and Chloe Steele at 110 each finished fifth in the weight classes. Sienna Spaulding at 105 and Mia Gardner at 135 each finished sixth. Lixy Lainez Rosas finished eighth at 155.
The Class 5A State Wrestling Championships will be held February 28 and March 1 at Park City Arena in Park City.
