The splashes came fast and furious at Emporia’s 19th annual Polar Plunge on Saturday.
As has been the case for nearly two decades, area residents signed up as individuals or teams to jump into Mouse Lake, raising funds for Special Olympics in the process. Longtime organizer and Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says the event has staying power because of its uniqueness.
Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms says the event is always well supported, and that was the case Saturday.
Special Olympics representative Jake LaMunyon, the grandson of Law Enforcement Torch Run founder Richard LaMunyon, says it’s gratifying to see Special Olympics grow and evolve over time.
Close to 50 people jumped into Mouse Lake, with air and water temperatures both in the 30s at plunge time. Totals are around $11,000.
For the costume contest, Margi Grimwood won the individual honor while Sigma Tau Gamma won the team award.
