The Emporia High basketball teams split their doubleheader with Topeka High Friday night at Spartan Gymnasium.
Emporia High snapped a 3-game losing streak with a 64-35 victory over the Trojans, winning the Dean Smith Trophy. Topeka High won the girls game, 45-14.
In the boys game, Emporia High jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. The Spartans led 16-11 after the first quarter and 30-18 at halftime. Emporia High outscored Topeka High 34-17 in the second half. Two Spartans scored in double figures led by Rylan Crowell’s 18 points and 14 rebounds. Kobe Franklin added 16. Emporia High assistant coach Jacob Kehres, who was filling in for head coach Lee Baldwin, said it was a great win to get.
Emporia High is now 11-7 on the season and 4-4 in the Centennial.
In the girls game, Emporia High jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Topeka High responded with 15 straight points for a 15-2 lead after one. Topeka High led 25-10 at halftime and outscored the Lady Spartans 20-4 in the second half. Maycee Davis led the way for Emporia High with 10 points. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said the Lady Spartans still had some bright spots in the game.
Emporia High is 3-15, 1-7 in the Centennial League. Both teams head to Manhattan on Tuesday. The RV-Doc Pregame Show is at 5:45 p.m. on KVOE.
