The Emporia High boys wrestling team will be sending seven wrestlers to the Class 5A State Wrestling Championships next weekend in Park City.
Entering Saturday’s competition in the Class 5A West Regional at Newton, the Spartans had 10 wrestlers remaining with Jose Vargas at 285 clinching his ticket on Friday at 285. Kolton Wyatt at 113, Jackson Goodman at 132, Landon Wohletz at 138, Dustin Dobson at 150, Garrett LeBlanc at 165 and Tayten Ervin at 175 all qualified for state by winning their first matches on Saturday.
Goodman finished fifth with an 11-5 decision over Hays’ Grady Lind. Dobson finished fifth with a 10-0 major decision over Evan Hartman of Andover. Ervin finished fifth with a win by fall at 1 minute and 33 seconds over Gavin Saner of Valley Center. Vargas finished sixth falling in an ultimate tiebreaker, 3-2, to Gavin Beck of Arkansas City. LeBlanc finished eighth as Goddard’s Eastyn Viera defeated him by a major decision,19-5. Wohletz finished eighth as Seaman’s Deegan Fraizer pinned him at 1 minute and 56 seconds. Wyatt finished eighth as Bishop Carroll’s JP Morgan pinned him at 1 minute and 44 seconds.
Emporia High coach Brook Medrano was happy with his team’s performance in a very difficult Class 5A West regional.
Along with the seven Spartans, 10 Lady Spartans will also wrestle at Park City Arena in the Class 5A State Wrestling Championships, which begin Friday at 9 a.m. All of Emporia High’s matches will be broadcast on KVOE.
