Funeral arrangements are currently pending for Jim and Josh Hoy, a father and son ranching duo best known for their involvement with the preservation of prairie history, following their sudden passing this past weekend.
Jim Hoy is best remembered as an accomplished author, professor and historian who dedicated much of his life to preserving, promoting and teaching the history of the prairie and prairie folk through several mediums. Hoy had over a dozen published works and was also a founder and the director emeritus of Emporia State University’s Center for Great Plains Studies.
Emporia City Commissioner Susan Brinkman worked alongside Hoy during his time as director calling it a true honor.
Hoy also played a significant role in the founding and establishment of Pioneer Bluffs serving as a member of the inaugural board and as a former vice-president. Hoy served on the board from 2007-2013 and helped lay the foundation for what the historic property has become in the words of former Director Lynn Smith.
Josh Hoy followed closely in the footprints of his father operating the Flying W Ranch in Chase County with his wife Gwen. Hoy was also serving as the Pioneer Bluffs Board Vice-President at the time of his passing.
