12 of the 17 Emporia High Wrestlers who made the trip to state are still in the hunt for the podium after day one.
On the girls side, EHS is on the verge of history with 3 lady Spartans set to compete for a state championship Saturday. Heily Batres (115 lbs), Kensley Medrano (120 lbs) and Alexa Castillo (235 lbs) were 3-0 on the day advancing to the state finals.
The Lady Spartans will place five on the podium as both Yanelli Caranza (145 lbs) and Sienna Spaulding (105 lbs) both advanced to the championship semi finals before both losing by fall. Also still in contention is Lixi Lainez Rosas (155 lbs) who was 1-1 on the day losing her first round match-up before picking up a 4-1 win in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Gabby Duarte (190 lbs) and Chloe Steele (110) lbs were also 1-1 winning their opening round matches before dropping to the consolation side of the bracket with a loss in the championship quarter finals.
Claire Starr (130 lbs) and Mia Gardner (135 lbs) both saw their seasons come to an end going 0-2 on day one. As a team, the Lady Spartans ended day one in third place in the team standings.
On the boys side, four wrestlers are still alive. Jackson Goodman (132 lbs), Dustin Dobson (150 lbs) and Tayten Ervin (175 lbs) all picked up first round victories to advance to the championship quarter-finals. All three were defeated by fall in the quarters and find themselves in the consolation bracket heading into day two.
Also still in contention is Jose Vargas (285 lbs) who was defeated in the opening round but won his consolation first round match by fall.
Going 0-2 on the day were Kolton Wyatt (113 lbs), Landon Wohletz (138 lbs) and Garrett LeBlanc (165 lbs).
Day two action will begin at 9 am with the second round of consolation matches.
