The Emporia State athletics department wrapped up another busy weekend on Sunday.
The Emporia State tennis teams were in action over the weekend. ESU fell twice with the men suffering a 4-0 defeat to Lubbock Christian while the Lady Hornets were swept 7-0 by the Lady Chapparals. The Hornet men didn’t win a set in their dual while the Lady Hornets dropped four three-set matches in singles to the Lady Chaps while being swept for the doubles point. ESU will host William Jewell for a doubleheader on Friday at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex at 12:00 p.m.
The Emporia State track and field team was in Maryville, Mo. for the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend. The Hornets placed fifth while the Lady Hornets finished 11th. Jonah Remsberg won the men’s heptathlon on Saturday. He was in third place in the event after Friday’s action and won the 1000m run to clinch the victory with a provisional qualifying score of 5265, the second best in program history. Will Allen had a provisional high jump Saturday to place fifth while Ty Anderson had a qualifying long jump to finish sixth. On Sunday, Connor Deters finished third in the shotput while Israel Domeh was third in the 200m with a provisional qualifying mark. The top finish for the ESU women was sixth in the 4x400m relay. The NCAA DII Indoor Championships begin March 13. E-State has 19 provisional qualifiers.
The Emporia State softball team started strong with a 2-0 first day at the Midwest Classic on Saturday. ESU flattened Maryville 14-5 in six innings in their first game before nipping Minnesota State-Mankato 5-4 in game two. ESU never trailed in game one after jumping out to a 10-0 lead through one and a half innings. The Lady Hornets led 5-0 through four in game two before holding off a Maverick comeback in the seventh. ESU split their two games on Sunday to go 3-1 at the event. The Lady Hornets started the day Sunday by blanking Rockhurst 6-0. ESU scored three in the fourth and three in the sixth while Gracie Rabe picked up her third complete game of the season in the circle. ESU ran out of gas in the afternoon session falling 9-1 to Augustana in a five-inning run rule to move to 14-7 on the year. Jordan Harrison took her first loss in the circle of the season.
The Emporia State baseball team was blanked on Opening Day at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia 10-0 in a seven-inning run rule on Saturday. UCO scored in each of the first six innings of the game while the Hornet offense struggled to string hits together. The Bronchos claimed the series with a 7-2 victory on Sunday. Peyton Lewis delivered a home run in the first to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Seth Stover went six innings in his start for ESU and didn’t surrender a run while scattering two hits with four strikeouts. The ‘Chos exploded for six runs in the seventh to take the lead and the Hornets couldn’t respond. Tanner Dawe gave up five earned runs with three walks in 0.2 innings to take the loss. The Hornets try to salvage game three of their series Monday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
