Evergy customers wanting to learn more about the utility’s plan to increase rates — or who have questions about the plan — are encouraged to go online for a special meeting Wednesday evening.
The Zoom hearing begins at 6 pm. The Kansas Corporation Commission, which has scheduled the meeting, encourages residents wanting to participate to register at its website, kcc.ks.gov, and click on the “Your Opinion Matters” tab by noon Tuesday. No registration is needed to simply watch the live video stream on the KCC’s YouTube channel.
Evergy has asked the Kansas Corporation Commission to increase rates by nearly $200 million. If approved as presented, this would be a better than 10-percent increase for average residential customers. Monthly bills could increase by more than $13 if the KCC gives its blessing. According to Evergy, the new rate schedule would help to pay for new gas-fired powered generation plants in Reno and Sumner counties, as well as a new solar facility in Douglas County.
The KCC plans to issue its ruling by July 7.
