The Symphony in the Flint Hills concert may be ending this summer, but the group organizing the event the last 20 years will continue its work to build knowledge of appreciation for the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie.
On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia this past Friday, Board Chair Mary Ice said attendance trends for outdoor activities were at least part of the reason for making this the last year of the event. However, she says the group’s mission will remain in place and will lead to other activities down the road — although that list hasn’t been set in stone just yet.
The event has brought the Kansas City Symphony to a Flint Hills concert setting throughout its history, with special musical guests becoming more commonplace over the last decade. This year’s featured performer is Kansas native and country music star Logan Mize. It has also had an increasing public emphasis on education through an expanding list of activities leading up to the concert. Longtime board member Kelly Tastove says she is proud of what the Symphony in the Flint Hills organization has built.
Grand Finale activities will be June 14 at the Evans Family Ranch near Strong City, with a lengthy list of prelude activities before the official concert. Tickets went on sale Saturday morning. More information is available at symphonyintheflinthills.org. The full interview is in the KVOE.com Audio Vault.
