The Emporia State baseball team went 1-1 on the first day of its road trip to St. Louis. In its first game of the day, Hillsdale hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Hornets 4-3. ESU never led in the game but tied it in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. Logan Myers and T. J. Racherbaumer each had multi-hit games for ESU including a solo homer for Myers. Jose Grijalva lasted 5.1 innings and gave up just two earned runs in a no decision. Eli Hernandez (0-1) gave up just three hits while striking out six in 3.1 innings but gave up the winning home run to take the loss.
In the second game of the day, the Hornet offense exploded for an 18-11 win over Maryville to end a four-game losing streak. ESU jumped out to a 7-1 lead after six runs came across in the second. Maryville took the lead with five in the third and the teams traded runs until ESU blew open a 13-11 ballgame with a five-spot in the top of the ninth. Noah Steele went 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI’s while hitting two home runs. E-State bashed six dingers in the game and outhit the Saints 21-13 in the win.
Emporia State (6-9, 1-5 MIAA) returns to action Saturday playing Hillsdale at 2:00 p.m. and finishes the trip with a 2:00 p.m. game Sunday at Maryville.
