The Emporia State softball team fell just short in a pair of 3-2 losses to #6 Rogers State to open up the season in Claremore, Okla. on Friday. The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first by manufacturing two runs, but three RSU homers gave the Hillcats the win including the game winner in the ninth inning. Sydney Wagner and Ally Miller each had two-hit games for E-State as pitcher Gracie Rabe (5-6) took a hard-luck loss tossing 8.1 innings and giving up just five hits in the complete-game defeat.
ESU led again early in the second game on a sacrifice fly but Rogers State plated two in the third to take the lead. Brooke Flewelling singled in a run to tie it in the fourth, but the Hillcats got the run right back and ESU never got a runner in scoring position the rest of the way. Jordan Harrison (7-2) pitched all six innings but took the loss giving up seven hits and three runs.
Emporia State (14-9, 0-2 MIAA) wraps up the weekend at Northeastern State Saturday.
