Sunday is the day to change all your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
Which means it’s time to at least check your smoke detectors.
Emporia Fire Battalion Ryan Conley says the premise of using the spring and fall clock changes as reminders for smoke detector batteries is more effective for traditional 9-volt batteries than the current trend of lithium batteries, simply because newer detectors don’t allow ready access to the batteries. Regardless, Conley says having working detectors are vital for fire safety — and detectors aren’t used as often as one might think.
Conley says there should be detectors outside living areas and near the kitchen but not inside because of the risk of false alarms.
Conley also says residents need to test their smoke detectors at least once a month.
