This is AmeriCorps week, and KVOE’s Morning Show had several guests from Emporia State University’s Teachers College to discuss the program and their involvement.
Teachers College Program Director Tasia Markowitz says this is the third year of involvement and second for operations after starting with a planning and organization year.
ESU student Paloma Leyva says she enjoys working with students at Jones Early Childhood Center. She also wants to make education easier for young Spanish speakers.
Fellow student Nicole Dalton grew up in an education family, so she jumped at the chance to connect with AmeriCorps and spend time at Jones.
Leyva and Dalton say their duties have included one-on-one time with early literacy, skills and other classroom help.
AmeriCorps has become the federal agency for national volunteerism, connecting more than 200,000 people with different organizations across the country every year. More information about AmeriCorps is available at americorps.gov.
