The investigation into last Friday’s extensive and destructive fire activity is still ongoing.
No new information has been released since the investigation got underway into the wildfires that sent at least two people to Newman Regional Health with possible smoke inhalation, damaged at least one home and several outbuildings and led to an extended emergency response from all county fire departments. According to Emporia Fire, investigators are still conducting interviews with residents as part of the investigation which also includes Lyon County Deputies.
The investigation continues with very high fire danger expected both Friday and Saturday thanks to a combination of temperatures in the upper 70s, dry grasses, low relative humidity levels and high winds. Greenwood County remains in a Red Flag Warning, meaning an automatic burn ban, through 7 pm Friday.
The high fire danger will transition to a low risk of severe weather very early Sunday with a marginal risk currently affecting areas along and east of a line from Osage City to near Hartford to Eureka. Be sure to stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more updates as they develop.
