Legendary “Voice of the Jayhawks” Bob Davis has passed away at the age of 80. His family made the announcement on Friday afternoon. Davis was a native Kansan and was born in Iola growing up in Topeka and graduating from Topeka West and later Washburn University. His first broadcasting job was at KAYS in Hays, Kansas where he was the play-by-play voice of Fort Hays State athletics including his final basketball call of the 1984 NAIA National Championship won by the Tiger men. Davis then called KU football and basketball for 32 seasons and also spent 16 summers broadcasting Kansas City Royals baseball on radio and television. Davis was on the call for men’s basketball national championship wins in 1988 and 2008 as well as the football team’s 2008 Orange Bowl victory. He also called several women’s Final Fours on CBS radio and is a member of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and was named Kansas Sportscaster of the Year 14 times by the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association.
