The Emporia State softball team went 1-3 in their return to MIAA play over the weekend.
The Lady Hornets split their doubleheader with Missouri Southern on Saturday. The Lions suffocated the ESU offense in game one on the way to a 4-0 win. The Lady Hornets were outhit 8-2 in the contest. Trailing 2-0 through six innings, ESU scored three runs in the seventh and eighth to pull out a split in game two with a 6-3 victory. Kennedy Topping started the rally with a solo homer before ESU tied the game on a double steal. A Sydney Wagner single gave ESU the lead. The Lions tied it in the bottom of the inning to force extras, but Ally Miller led off the eighth with a solo shot to put ESU back in front. Bailey Flewelling added another dinger before the Lady Hornets plated the final run of the game on a MoSo error.
#25 Pittsburg State broke a 3-all tie with a four-run fifth inning to take game one 7-3. ESU was outhit 8-2 in the game and committed three errors leading to five unearned PSU runs. Flewelling provided the offensive highlight for E-State with a solo home run in the fourth. The Gorillas thrashed Lady Hornet pitching early in game two on the way to an 11-1 run rule victory to sweep the doubleheader. The Gorillas scored two in the first, six in the second, and two in the third while outhitting the Lady Hornets 12-2. ESU managed just one run in the fifth on a fielder’s choice. ESU (22-12, 3-5 MIAA) celebrates Opening Day at the Trusler Sports Complex on Friday when they host Nebraska-Kearney.
