It’s early in the spring burn season, but Lyon and Osage counties currently have the most area acres burned in the latest report from Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management.
The report for the period ending March 13 — just before massive grass fire activity areawide March 14 — indicates Osage County has just under 2,000 acres burned. Lyon County is at over 1,700 acres.
Other area numbers:
*Chase County: 710 acres
*Coffey County: 77 acres
*Greenwood County: 448 acres
*Morris County: 726 acres
*Wabaunsee County: 710 acres
A week remains before the annual burn restrictions across the Flint Hills as part of the state’s Smoke Management Plan. Those restrictions allow for controlled pasture burns, ceremonial fires and grilling but ban controlled burns of debris piles, crop residue and construction waste.
