The Emporia City Commission race has another name on the ballot.
Aaron Larson filed for a seat on the commission with the Lyon County Clerk’s Office Thursday. Larson is currently the CFO of Midwest Evaluation and Research LLC. and has held seats on the city’s Human Relations Committee and Economic Development Task Force in recent years as well as board positions with local organizations such as Emporia Spanish Speakers, Southwick House and Social Innovation Labratory. Larson says it was those experiences that inspired him to run for a seat on the commission on top of a lot of encouragement from his fellow Emporians.
Audio PlayerWhile it is his first time on an election ballot, this will not be the first time Larson has sought a seat on the commission as last August, he was among 10 individuals who submitted their names to fill the vacant commission seat following the passing of longtime commissioner Danny Giefer. Current commissioner Tyler Curtis was ultimately chosen to fill the seat.
If elected to the commission come November, Larson says he expects to focus much of his time on two areas, economic development and by extension, small business development.
Audio PlayerLarson now joins Monica Duncan and Kurt Steinkuhler on the ballot, with all three seeking to fill one of three seats up for election. Those seats are currently occupied by Curtis, Jamie Sauder and Susan Brinkman.
Neither Curtis nor Sauder has announced their intentions for the election, with Brinkman stating earlier this year that she will not be seeking another term in office.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon on June 2. If enough candidates file, the primary election will take place on August 5.
The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4.
