The KVOE listening area has a few weather-related hazards heading into the upcoming weekend.
Very high fire danger, an occasional feature to the forecast the last two weeks, continues areawide Friday through Saturday. High temperatures in the mid- and upper 70s will be in place, along with south winds above 30 mph and dry grasses.
All area counties are in a slight severe weather risk for Saturday evening into early Sunday morning. All hazards are possible, but wind and hail are the most likely issues.
These forecast components follow Thursday’s hailstorm that caused a lot of vehicle and window damage along parts of the US Highway 56 corridor in northern Lyon County on Thursday. Areas between Allen and Admire got quarter- to egg-sized hail.
North Lyon County Youth Association Board President Kylie DeDonder says the community center in Allen had a lot of its windows blown out, including some dating back to the late 1940s. DeDonder says there was a plan to replace a lot of the now-broken windows before the storm hit.

Northern Heights High School also got a lot of window and vehicle damage as well. USD 251 North Lyon County Superintendent Bob Blair says there was window damage at the agriculture building and skylight damage to the maintenance building. He also says numerous vehicles, including school buses, were damaged. Inspections are ahead to determine any scope of roof damage. Blair says there will be a lot of repairs in short order, adding to the district’s list of upcoming repairs and maintenance.

Wet weather from showers and storms also led to an injury crash in Chase County shortly before 9 am Thursday. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 28-year-old Hunter Nance of Wichita lost control of his SUV and hit the center barrier wall on the Kansas Turnpike between the Matfield Green service exit and the Flint Hills cattle pens exit. Nance was taken by private vehicle to an unspecified hospital.
