The Emporia State softball team split their doubleheader with Fort Hays State on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia.
The Lady Hornets managed just one hit in game one and fell 2-1 in eight innings. The Tigers had 10 hits in the game but had trouble stringing them together against Hornet starter Gracie Rabe who went 6.0 innings and gave up eight hits and just one run in a no decision. ESU’s only run came on a wild pitch.
E-State flipped the script in game two and strung several hits together for big innings in a 12-1 run rule of the Tigers to split the series. The Lady Hornets torched Tiger pitching early on the way to four runs in the first and then exploded for seven runs in the third matching their high total for an inning this season. Sydney Wagner went 3-for-3 for the Lady Hornets and said the team’s offensive approach changed in the second game.

Head coach April Rosales said the team adjusted well to take advantage of opportunities to split the series.

Brooke Flewelling went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in game two while Jordan Harrison (12-3) pitched all five innings for the Lady Hornets giving up just two hits and one unearned run. The Lady Hornets honored its 1980 AIAW National Championship team between games. ESU (25-13, 6-6 MIAA) continues an eight-game homestand Friday against Central Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
