There has been no shortage of controversial local and federal government topics in recent weeks.
At the federal level, one of the major talking points has been the issuance of tariffs on foreign countries a topic that Kansas US Congressman Derek Schmidt weighed in on during his monthly appearance on KVOE’s Morning Show Friday. When it comes to the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, Schmidt says it is not the call he would have made if he were the “quarterback.” However, he says that is not his role and, therefore, not his call.
That said, Schmidt tells KVOE News he understands and supports what the President is trying to accomplish through the tariffs.
Audio PlayerIn more local matters, KVOE News asked Schmidt’s opinion on the Kansas Legislature’s recent vote to override Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of Senate Bill 4, which removes the three-day grace period for advance mail ballots to be received and counted in the election. Schmidt says he supports the measure, noting he has always thought the grace period was “not a good decision” and commended the legislature for doing away with it.
Audio PlayerSchmidt’s appearance on KVOE’s airwaves Friday followed a recent visit to the southern US border where he says there has been tremendous progress made, noting just two years ago when he visited the border there was “a lot of chaos.”
Audio PlayerSchmidt credited the changes at the US border to the change in leadership at the federal level, saying, “It turns out all we needed was a change in President.”
Congressman Schmidt’s appearance on KVOE is a monthly recurring segment that will take place on the last Friday of each month. The full interview with Congressman Schmidt can be found in the KVOE.com audio vault.
