Emporia Police Capt. Lisa Hayes says her 10 weeks of specialized training through the FBI validates the approach Emporia Police officers use on a daily basis.
Audio PlayerHayes joined KVOE’s Morning Show to discuss her experiences, starting with a three-year period between her promotion to captain and initial suggestion by Police Chief Ed Owens to being selected last year. Hayes also discussed the 10-weeks of training, including the lessons she learned from her coursework and others involved in the National Academy.
Audio PlayerPhysical training, a mandatory course, was a key component of the training. Hayes needed to run a mile in under 11 minutes 30 seconds before being accepted and there was a lengthy period of physical training daily. Candidates could also take several electives. For Hayes, the list included crisis negotiations, narcotics, legal matters, leadership and violent crime.
Hayes says the experience puts her in a better position for career advancement at a later date — if she wants to take that route.
